Why More Aggressive Dieting Doesn’t Always Mean Better Results — And What Actually Works Instead

At Central Athlete, we often meet people who are ready to go all-in. They want results fast and believe the harder they push, the faster they’ll get there. But here’s the truth: when it comes to nutrition and fat loss (and most anything), intensity without sustainability rarely works.

A recent study looked at 14 resistance-trained women who followed either a severe or progressive energy deficit for 8 weeks. Both groups trained hard, lifting four days a week and doing cardio six days a week. Protein intake was high, the program was structured, and support was provided. On paper, everything was set up for success.

But here’s the kicker: the group that was supposed to lose more fat by dieting harder… didn’t. In fact, despite being assigned a larger calorie deficit, the severe deficit group didn’t lose more fat or body mass. Why? Because the approach wasn’t realistic to sustain, adherence dropped, frustration kicked in, and the plan backfired.

Meanwhile, the progressive deficit group, who eased into their diet, ended up with similar results in fat loss, without the same drop in consistency or motivation. Even though both groups were equally committed to their training, the group with the slower approach had a better shot at staying the course.

Here’s what we take away from this:

  • A bigger calorie cut doesn’t mean better fat loss if it’s too aggressive to maintain.

  • Sustainable, step-by-step nutrition changes lead to better adherence and better results.

  • Lean mass, energy, and performance are easier to protect when you diet smart, not fast.

That’s why at Central Athlete, we design personalized nutrition protocols that align with your lifestyle, timeline, and goals. We don’t guess. We don’t hand you a crash diet. And we sure don’t want your hard work in the gym to go to waste because your nutrition plan wasn’t built for long-term success.
